The Montaigne centre engaged with The Hague Institute of the Internationalisation of the Law in an international research project into the role of Highest Courts in an Internationalising World. Its objective is to explore some of the most interesting and challenging questions which have been raised over the last decade with regards to the role of national courts in transnational and international environments. Judges cite their colleagues from foreign jurisdictions on a wide variety of matters and are thus seen to actively engage the legal world beyond their own borders in a conscious and voluntary manner. Moreover, judges have shown themselves willing and able to establish far reaching and comprehensive networks, both formal and informal. Conferences, workshops, exchanges, as well as electronic forums and e-mail have become the media through which judges discuss the challenges and difficulties related to their profession. Project leaders are Antoine Hol (Montaigne centre), John Bell (Cambridge University), and Andrea Lollini (Bologna University).
